Neuromuscular Dentistry
Henderson, Kentucky
Neuromuscular dentistry examines your occlusion and attempts to place your jaw in its optimal position. The term “occlusion” refers to the way your upper and lower jaw fit together. Traditional dentistry is based on the concept that your natural occlusion is best for you and is generally aimed to restore your bite to this natural position. Neuromuscular dentistry expands upon the traditional mechanical approach to dentistry. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the muscles that move your jaw. Neuromuscular dentistry utilizes the relaxed position of the muscles of the head and neck to place the jaw in its optimal position, rather than assuming its natural position is best.
The symptoms of TMJ disorder include:
- Pain
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Jaw clicking or popping
The neuromuscular tests are conducted by a Computerized Mandibular Scan (CMS). These tests are painless and non-invasive. Our neuromuscular dentists simply place a piece of sticky tape over a magnet on your lower gum. After you put on headgear that is lightweight, you open and close your mouth. The headgear follows the path of the magnet, and sends this information to the computer. The key muscles that control your jaw in both function and at rest are documented at the precise point that your jaw is being held in relation to your upper teeth.
Dr. Morris, an LVI Trained Neuromuscular Dentist, studies the pattern of your jaw as it opens and closes through its full range of motion. Neuromuscular dentists use additional information to determine if your natural occlusion is optimal or if it should be adjusted. Our neuromuscular dentists can significantly reduce the symptoms of TMJ and TMD, such as migraine headaches, pain, and clicking, by adjusting your occlusion to its optimal position.
